Lesser Adjutant Storks At WCS’s Bronx Zoo Foster Abandoned Egg and Raise Chick As Their Own
Bronx, NY – Aug. 13, 2015 – A pair of lesser adjutant storks (Leptoptilos javanicus) at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo have successfully hatched two chicks – one of which was from an egg produced by another adult pair. The surrogate parents are caring for both chicks as if they were their own.

August 13 -Tiger Poachers and Dealer Busted In Indonesia
The Acehnese provincial Police (Polda Aceh), the East Acehnese Police (Polres Aceh Timur), and the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Wildlife Crimes Unit (WCU) announced today an enforcement action against wildlife poachers and a dealer for trading tiger parts. The perpetrators were arrested in Aceh Tamiang, Aceh on August 8, 2015.

New York - August 11, 2015 - The Society for Conservation Biology has honored Dr. Stacy Jupiter—Melanesia Program Director for WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society)— with its Early Career Conservation Award. The award celebrates the achievements of conservationists that have been out of school for ten years or less.

Saving the Unloved, One Crowd at a Time
New York - August 10, 2015 - A newly released study from WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) offers hope of conservation to the world’s low-profile and more unloved members of the animal kingdom. The study, which appears in the international conservation journal, Oryx, demonstrates that a “Wisdom of Crowds” method can successfully be used to determine the conservation status of species when more expensive standard field methods are not feasible.

WCS is Awarded $40k Grant  by National Endowment for the Humanities  for Planning of New Archive Space
Bronx, NY – Aug. 10, 2015 – The WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) has been awarded a $40,000 planning grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections grant program to develop the WCS Archives Conceptual Preservation Design Plan. Founded upon preservation strategies that balance effectiveness, cost, and environmental impact, the Conceptual Preservation Design Plan will serve as a crucial first step in WCS’s development of a new space to preserve its unique historical collections.

SNAP: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) herald new role for nature conservation in international development
At the opening of the 100th Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of America (ESA), the Science for Nature and People (SNAP) partnership announced plans to dramatically expand its activities in response to growing demand for solutions to challenges in nature conservation and human development. This demand is expected to increase further when the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are announced at the UN General Assembly in September.
