New York – September 23, 2015 – Pope Francis’s visit to the Big Apple this week is sparking a celebration, especially among the striped, finned, and feathered at WCS’s zoos and aquarium. To commemorate the Pope’s first visit to New York City and the United States, WCS has produced a welcome video featuring penguins, gorillas, tortoises, gibbons, sea lions, and other inhabitants of WCS’s Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium, Queens Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, and Central Park Zoo. The video acknowledges Pope Francis’s emergence as a powerful spokesperson for conservation.

The Aceh Tenggara District Police (Polres Aceh Tenggara), the Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP) rangers, and the Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS’s) Wildlife Crimes Unit (WCU) announced today the arrest of a wildlife poacher and a trader for trading body parts of a Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae).  The arrest occurred in Kutacane, Aceh on September 9, 2015, and was led by Second Police Inspector (Ipda) Bustani, four policemen and two GLNP forest rangers. Sept. 16, 2015 – Eighteen of New York City's best chefs paired their food with great wine from the Jekel Vineyards at Sip for the Sea 2015 to benefit the WCS’s New York Aquarium. Hundreds attended the event, which raised awareness about the importance of sustainable seafood.  All proceeds will support the New York Aquarium and WCS’s commitment to marine conservation locally and around the world.

New York – Sept. 16, 2015 – The United Nations System, including the CITES Secretariat, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the World Bank, in collaboration with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Member States, and civil society partners, will host an evening reception and high-level remarks on wildlife and forest crime at WCS’s Central Park Zoo on Sunday, Sept. 27. 

Sept. 15, 2015 – WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) New York Aquarium, in collaboration with the American Littoral Society, Partnerships for Parks, and other partners, will hold a beach cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 19 in Coney Island’s Kaiser Park to acknowledge International Coastal Cleanup Day.

Bronx, NY – Sept. 9, 2015 – The WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo is gearing up for the fall season with a Harvest Festival that celebrates nature with classic fall food and entertainment. Activities will be free with admission to the zoo for two weekends in September (Sat. – Tues., Sept. 12-15; and Sat. – Sun., Sept. 19, 20).
