WCS to Collaborate with World Customs Organization on Illegal Wildlife Trade
BRUSSELS (7 January, 2016) – WCS and the World Customs Organization (WCO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at reducing the amount of illegal wildlife products moving across international borders. The MoU was signed by Dr. Cristián Samper, WCS President and CEO, and Kunio Mikuriya, Secretary General of the WCO.

Omnibus Budget Passage is Good News for Wildlife

WASHINGTON (December 18, 2015) – WCS regards Congress and the Administration’s agreement on an omnibus federal budget as a win for wildlife, as the sides struck a balanced approach that was free from most harmful policy riders and maintained or increased funding to stop wildlife trafficking by terrorist networks and other conservation priorities, including supporting the Global Environment Facility.

SNAP partnership convenes world’s biggest study of China’s illegal trade in ivory
SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA/BEIJING, CHINA, December 16, 2015 –The Science for Nature and People (SNAP) partnership announced it has convened a new Expert Working Group, which will result in one of the most comprehensive studies to date of China’s illegal trade in ivory.

Major Illegal Tiger Skin Trader Arrested in Indonesia
NEW YORK (December 15, 2015) – The Criminal Investigation Division of the Indonesian National Police and the WCS’s Wildlife Crimes Unit (WCU) announced today an enforcement action against a major tiger skin trader and an intermediary who offered tiger skin products to potential buyers. Both were  arrested in Jakarta, on December 11, 2015.

New Wildlife Trafficking Bill Introduced in Senate

WASHINGTON (December 10, 2015) – WCS applauded the introduction of the Eliminate, Neutralize, and Disrupt Wildlife Trafficking Act in the U.S. Senate. The legislation is led by Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) and Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and would bolster wildlife trafficking law enforcement and increase support for wildlife rangers.

WASHINGTON (November 3, 2015) – WCS applauded today’s House passage of H.R. 2494, the Global Anti-Poaching Act, that would bolster wildlife trafficking law enforcement, including strengthening the prosecution of offenders under racketeering and money laundering laws and increasing support for wildlife rangers. Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) and Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) introduced the bill, which attracted 67 Democratic and 47 Republican co-sponsors.
