GUNS, NETS, AND BULLDOZERS: Three Quarters of the World’s Threatened Species are Imperiled from Agriculture, Land Conversion, Overharvesting

August 10, 2016 -- Less than a month away from the kick-off of the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Hawaii, a team of scientists report in the journal Nature that three quarters of the world’s threatened species are imperiled because people are converting their habitat into agricultural lands and overharvesting their populations.

First Whale Detected by Newly Deployed Acoustic Buoy in New York Bight, and Scientists Say It’s a Big One!
New York (July 28, 2016) – A new acoustic buoy recently deployed by scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) New York Aquarium to listen for some of the world’s biggest animals in the New York Bight has detected its first whale species, and it’s a really big one.

Most Biodiverse Countries Spending the Least on Conservation, Study Finds

June 20, 2016—Countries that contain most of the world’s species biodiversity are also spending the least on a per-person basis to protect these natural assets, according to scientists from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the University of Queensland. The authors also noted that spending appears to be associated with the country’s social and governance organization.
