The future’s looking brighter for four endangered Javan gibbons, four baby siamangs, and two palm cockatoos, after they were rescued from the hands of an international wildlife trader in Indonesia. The alleged trader specialized in smuggling live animals, and was connected to crime syndicates in Russia, Singapore, Thailand, and Cyprus.

Rangers from the Ministry of Forestry and the Jakarta National Police Investigation Division arrested the trader and confiscated the animals in Bali. This most recent wildlife crime crackdown is one of many that show Indonesia is serious about protecting its natural heritage.

WCS’s Wildlife Crimes Unit provides data and technical advice to law enforcement agencies in Indonesia to help support investigation and prosecution of crimes like these. The Unit assisted the government in smashing a tiger poaching ring earlier this month.
