Bronx, NY – April 4, 2011 – The Bronx Zoo and New York Daily News have received just more than 33,000 nominations for a name of its Egyptian cobra.

Partnering with the New York Daily News, the Bronx Zoo offered the public the opportunity to submit their favorite name for the world-famous snake. Those suggestions have been narrowed down to these five finalists, and the winner will be chosen by public vote.

  •  Agnes - Greek for pure or holy; reference also to St. Agnes
  • Amaunet - A goddess in Ancient Egyptian religion; meaning ‘the female hidden one’
  • Cleopatra – The last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt; killed herself by means of an Egyptian cobra bite
  • Subira – Egyptian for patient
  • Mia


Everyone is encouraged to visit www.bronxzoo.com to vote on their favorite. The winning name will be announced on Thursday, April 7. Voting ends 12:01 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, April 6.
