Scientists estimate there are only 84 remaining highly endangered Amur leopards (Panthera pardus orientalis) remaining in the wild across its current range along the southernmost border of Primorskii Province in Russia and Jilin Province of China.

17 January 2018 – The Far Eastern or Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) is already among the rarest of the world’s big cats, but new research reveals that it faces yet another threat: infection with canine distemper virus (CDV).

(Guangzhou – August 16, 2016) – Seven defendants who were engaged in smuggling radiated tortoises from Madagascar into China were sentenced to prison terms, according to WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), which praised Guangzhou Intermediate Court’s July 26^th verdict. The entire criminal network – from overseas accomplices to Chinese buyers – was targeted and dismantled, sending a serious warning to other would-be illegal traders. 

June 2, 2016 – WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), founder of the 96 Elephants campaign, applauded the Obama Administration’s announcement of a near-total ban on the interstate trade in ivory. The final revision for of the 4(d) rule of the Endangered Species Act for African elephants allows for exceptions for items containing de minimis amounts of ivory and documented antiques.

Today, the White House issued a fact sheet which states that the United States and Chinese Governments intend to cooperate on a number of vital issues, including efforts to combat wildlife trafficking and a commitment  to ensure each country halts  the domestic commercial sale of ivory.
