The Tiffany & Co. Foundation Awards Wildlife Conservation Society with Donation Towards  its Marine Protected Area Fund

June 5, 2017 – The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) today announced The Tiffany & Co. Foundation’s  $1 million dollar grant towards its Marine Protected Area (MPA) Fund. The grant will be instrumental in the Fund’s mission to establish and strengthen MPAs around the world.

Lack of Staffing, Funds Prevent Marine Protected Areas from Realizing Full Potential
March 22, 2017--Marine protected areas (MPAs) are an increasingly popular strategy for protecting marine biodiversity, but a new global study demonstrates that widespread lack of personnel and funds are preventing MPAs from reaching their full potential. Only 9 percent of MPAs reported having adequate staff.

Scientists Confirm Dorado Catfish As All-Time Distance Champion of Freshwater Migrations
February 6, 2017 – An international team of scientists has confirmed that the dorado catfish (Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii) of the Amazon River basin holds the record for the world’s longest exclusively freshwater fish migration, an epic life-cycle journey stretching nearly the entire width of the South America continent.

Paraguay Unveils New Management Plan For Jaguars
Asunción, Paraguay (December 22, 2016) – The Government of Paraguay took a major step forward today to ensuring a future for the Western Hemisphere’s largest cat species by completing a country-wide management plan for jaguars, the culmination of two years of cooperation between government agencies, the public and private sectors, and researchers from WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and other NGOs.

Scientists Produce a New Roadmap For Guiding Development & Conservation in the Amazon
December 8, 2016—Scientists from WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), The Nature Conservancy, and several partners in Brazil and Peru have produced a geographic information system (GIS) “roadmap” to help guide conservation efforts at large scale in the Amazon River basin, a region roughly the size of the United States.

STUDY: Global habitat loss still rampant across much of the Earth

December 6, 2016 – As 196 signatory nations of the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) meet this week in Cancun, Mexico, to discuss their progress towards averting the current biodiversity crisis, researchers from a range of universities and NGOs report in the international journal Conservation Letters that habitat destruction still far outstrips habitat protected across many parts of the planet.
