WCS’s Bronx Zoo Debuts First Gelada Baboon Born in NYC in 13 years

Bronx, N.Y. – April 22, 2015 – The first gelada (Theropithecus gelada) born in the U.S. in more than 13 years is making its debut at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo. The Bronx Zoo is the only zoo in the U.S. that exhibits geladas.

The Government of Madagascar commemorates Earth Day with the formal creation of three community-led marine protected areas that will double the surface of the country’s marine protected area network, according to WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society).

Annual Bronx Zoo Birdathon Returns: Presented by JetBlue
Bronx, NY – April 20, 2015 – Following a successful inaugural event last year, WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) is bringing back the Bronx Zoo Birdathon on Saturday, May 9 during the peak of the spring migration season. This year’s Birdathon promises to be bigger and better with prizes, keeper chats, conservation experts, family activities, and a free-flying bird show, all presented by JetBlue Airways.

Bronx, N.Y. – April 16, 2015 – WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) is now offering New York City college students complimentary admission to the Bronx Zoo. The offer applies to students attending a college within the five boroughs, or New York City residents attending a non-New York City college. Students must be enrolled in two- or four-year undergraduate programs.

Two primatologists working in the forests of the Republic of Congo have returned from the field with a noteworthy prize: the first-ever photograph of the Bouvier’s red colobus monkey, a rare primate not seen for more than half a century and suspected to be extinct by some, according to WCS (the Wildlife Conservation Society).

Two Baby Western Lowland Gorillas Debut at WCS’s Bronx Zoo
Bronx, NY – April 15, 2015 – Two infant western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) are making their public debut at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo. This is the second pair of gorillas born at the Bronx Zoo in just over a year.

April 16 - Indonesian Authorities Arrest Online Orangutan Trader
The State Prosecutor of North Sumatra and WCS’s Wildlife Crimes Unit announced the arrest of a suspect for trafficking a living orangutan in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The trafficker allegedly sold wildlife through Facebook and by BlackBerry Messenger. The arrest was made on April 13, 2015.
