Massive Study Across Western Equatorial Africa Finds More Gorillas and Chimpanzees Than Expected, but 80% Are Outside the Safe Havens of Protected Areas

A massive decade-long study of Western Equatorial Africa’s gorillas and chimpanzees has uncovered both good news and bad about our nearest relatives. The good news: there are one third more western lowland gorillas and one tenth more central chimpanzees than previously thought. The bad news: the vast majority of these great apes (80 percent) exist outside of protected areas, and gorilla populations are declining by 2.7 percent annually.

10th Annual “WCS Run for the Wild” at the Bronx Zoo

Bronx, N.Y. – April 23, 2018 – The 2018 WCS Run for the Wild marks the 10th anniversary of the Bronx Zoo’s 5K event dedicated to saving wildlife and wild places.  The annual 5K race and family fun run/walk scheduled for Saturday, April 28.  Runners, walkers, and wildlife supporters are invited to participate.

New York Aquarium Opens New “OCEANSIDE GRILL” Serving up Sustainable Seafood and No Plastics
The WCS New York Aquarium has opened an ocean-side grill that will serve up sustainable seafood and tips on how to eat responsibly as stewards of the world’s ocean. The grill is a no single-use plastic zone. All food is served on environmentally-friendly packaging: no plastic straws, cups, bags or other items.

62 Shark Scientists Endorse Bipartisan Shark Sustainability Bill

WASHINGTON (April 17, 2018) – Ahead of a House Natural Resources Committee hearing on various shark conservation bills, 62marine scientists with expertise on sharks and rays submitted a letter to the committee calling for passage of the H.R. 5248, the Sustainable Shark Fisheries and Trade Act.

STUDY: Logging Tropical Forests Jeopardizing Drinking Water
A team of researchers from The University of Queensland (UQ), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), and other groups have found that increasing land clearing for logging in Solomon Islands–even with best management strategies in place – will lead to unsustainable levels of soil erosion and significant impacts to downstream water quality.
