INDONESIA WILDLIFE TRADERS ON THE RUN: WCS Says Illegal Traders are Changing Location Due to Increased Enforcement

Night Stalker: Rare camera trap images show leopard making kill in India’s Bhadra Tiger reserve
NEW YORK (APRIL 13, 2016) –WCS (Wildlife conservation Society) released a  stunning set of camera trap images recorded last week that show the dramatic end for a large Sambar deer (possibly weighing 200-300 kilos) taken down by the suffocating bite of a leopard.

Wildlife markets in Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) illegally trade in high volumes of protected species and animals that can host dangerous pathogens, reports a new study from an international team of leading wildlife health professionals.

This Lao PDR trade, which endangers the region’s biodiversity, has the potential to be a serious human health threat globally.

Tiger Traders Arrested by Indonesian Police in Leuser Landscape, Indonesia
The Aceh Provincial Police, Bireun District Police (Polres Bireun), and the Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) Wildlife Crimes Unit (WCU) announced today an enforcement action in a case involving trade in tiger parts. One perpetrator, arrested in Bireun, Aceh, Sumatra, on March 18, 2016, was linked to a second, who later turned himself in.

A Rolling Stone Gathers No Mates
( NEW YORK – March 14, 2016) - Papa might not have been a rolling stone, according to a new study that examined the mating dynamics of transient wildlife that have dispersed from other areas.   The researchers found if males traveling from long distances are less attractive to females, connectivity can be greatly impacted.  They link these results to existing evidence showing that males from far-off areas have less offspring.

New Bat Habitat Discovered in Western Alberta
Central Alberta (February 25, 2016) WCS Canada announced today the discovery of two bat hibernacula —places where bats hibernate during winter months—in the Alberta foothills. The discovery was made recently during Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Canada’s ongoing research as part of the BatCaver program (www.batcaver.org).

Two WCS Scientists Are Finalists for World’s Leading Award for Animal Conservation
(NEW YORK- February 9, 2016) WCS is pleased to announce that two of its scientists, Dr. Joel Berger and Dr. P. Dee Boersma, have advanced as finalists for the 2016 Indianapolis Prize.  This announcement was made by Indianapolis Prize officials today as the six finalists for the world’s leading award for animal conservation were revealed. In recognition of their success in the conservation of at-risk species, Berger and Boersma join fellow finalists Dr. Rodney Jackson, Professor Carl Jones, Dr. Carl Safina and Dr. Amanda Vincent.

NEW YORK (22 January 2016) – An international collaboration between law enforcement agencies and wildlife crime investigators including the London Metropolitan Police Wildlife Crime Unit, UK Border Force, East Java Police (Indonesia), Interpol and the Wildlife Crimes Unit (WCU) of WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) has resulted in the arrest, conviction and sentencing of an illegal wildlife trader in London.
