December 15, 2016 – WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) released today its favorite images of 2016. Ten of the images come from WCS’s Bronx Zoo, and ten images are from WCS’s Global Conservation Programs taken by WCS scientists working around the world. 

December 14, 2016 – Marine scientists have discovered that two species of dolphin in the waters off Bangladesh are genetically distinct from those in other regions of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans, a finding that supports a growing body of evidence that the Bay of Bengal harbors conditions that drive the evolution of new life forms, according to a new study by the American Museum of Natural History(AMNH), WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), and the cE3c - Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (Universidade de Lisboa).

WASHINGTON (December 13, 2016) — A global campaign recently launched by WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) to stop or reroute a proposed superhighway in Nigeria’s Cross River State has succeeded in securing 100,081 petition signatures in support of the effort. 

Toronto (December 13, 2016). Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Canada has released “The Caribou Story Map”—a web-based interactive tool that provides users with locations of mining claims and information on the potential effects of mining exploration activities on caribou habitat in Ontario’s Far North.

NEW YORK – Dec. 13, 2016 – A new exhibit in the Reptile House at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo features the Grand Cayman iguana (Cyclura lewisi), also known as the blue iguana. The exhibit is now open to the public and highlights an amazing conservation success story.   Once numbering fewer than 20 animals, the species has been brought back from the brink of extinction.

FORT COLLINS, CO – December 8, 2016 – Newly published research in the journal PLOS ONE by scientists at WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society ), Colorado State University (CSU), and University of California-Berkeley finds that human recreation activities in protected areas are impacting wildlife, and more often than not, in negative ways.

December 8, 2016—Scientists from WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), The Nature Conservancy, and several partners in Brazil and Peru have produced a geographic information system (GIS) “roadmap” to help guide conservation efforts at large scale in the Amazon River basin, a region roughly the size of the United States.
