Registration is now open for the 12th annual WCS Run for the Wild 5K run/walk. The spring tradition is scheduled for Saturday, April 25 at the Bronx Zoo.
This year’s event is dedicated to and inspired by rhinos. There are five species of rhinos remaining in the world – three of which (Javan, black, and Sumatran rhinos) are classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The other two species, white and greater one-horned rhinos, are classified as Near Threatened and Vulnerable, respectively. All rhino species are under tremendous pressure from illegal poaching and other human activities.
Since its inception in 2009, more than more than 57,000 people have participated in the WCS Run for the Wild at the Bronx Zoo. The event is always held on the last Saturday in April, which coincides with Earth Day. As 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and the 125th anniversary of the founding of WCS, the annual 5K run/walk is a fun way for families and nature lovers to help contribute to conservation and a better planet.
Each year, the WCS Run for the Wild raises awareness of the threats facing wildlife while fundraising to help WCS conservation work at the Bronx Zoo and around the world. Runners, walkers, and wildlife supporters are invited to participate and/or support a participant. There are prizes for achieving the fundraising goals and an early bird discount is available through February 9.
The 5k race for individual runners will begin at 8:00 a.m.; casual runners and walkers can take part in the Family Fun Run/Walk at 8:45 a.m.
More than 5,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate. All are welcome to stay after the race to take part in post-run activities. All participants are invited to spend the day at the Bronx Zoo and visit the zoo’s white rhinos in Zoo Center and the greater one-horned rhinos along the Wild Asia Monorail.
Post-race activities include: Bronx Zoo General Admission, music and dancing, face painting, games, and a beer garden for those 21+ years old. Registration is currently open. More information and registration/sponsorship details are available online at WCSRunfortheWild.org.
