World’s Leading Coffee Companies Commit to Tackle Deforestation in Indonesia

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) announced today that a group of the world’s leading coffee companies has committed to addressing deforestation from illegal coffee production inside Indonesia’s Bukit Barisan Selatan (BBS) National Park – a key protected area for Sumatran tigers, rhinos, and elephants, and part of the “Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra,” an internationally recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Critically Endangered Sumatran Tigers On Path To Recovery in an ‘In Danger’ UNESCO World Heritage Site

October 23, 2017 – A new scientific publication from WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park Authority looks at the effectiveness of the park’s protection zone and finds that the density of Sumatran tigers has increased despite the continued threat of living in an ‘In Danger’ World Heritage Site.

Wildlife Traders Arrested in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia
Medan, Indonesia (October 24, 2016). The Wildlife Conservation Society’s Wildlife Crimes Unit (WCU), in collaboration with North Sumatra Police (POLDA SUMUT), arrested three wildlife traders in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia on October 14, 2016. Among the confiscated items were a 1.5 meter Sumatran tiger skin, pangolin scales, a snake skin, turtle shells, deer organs and stuffed Hawksbill turtle.

CITES CoP17: A Wildlife Crisis: Flying Ivory
