WASHINGTON (December 21, 2016) – WCS applauded President Obama’s decision to withdraw offshore areas in the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans from future oil and gas development, including the Hudson Canyon off the coast of New York.

Scientists Studying Dolphins in Bangladesh Find the Bay of Bengal a Realm of Evolutionary Change
December 14, 2016 – Marine scientists have discovered that two species of dolphin in the waters off Bangladesh are genetically distinct from those in other regions of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans, a finding that supports a growing body of evidence that the Bay of Bengal harbors conditions that drive the evolution of new life forms, according to a new study by the American Museum of Natural History(AMNH), WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), and the cE3c - Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (Universidade de Lisboa).

Triggerfish Needed to Grow Reefs, New Research Finds

November 30, 2016—A study of complex coral reef ecosystems in the western Indian Ocean found that one species of fish—the orange-lined triggerfish—may play a significant role in maintaining a reef’s ability to thrive and grow, according to investigations by WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society).

Belize’s Glover’s Reef Providing Refuge For New Generation of Sea Turtles
November 29, 2016—A new generation of threatened hawksbill sea turtles is thriving in the protected waters of Glover’s Reef Atoll, Belize, evidence that efforts to protect these and other marine species in one of the world’s great barrier reef systems are working, according to WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and the Belize Fisheries Department.

Little-known Underwater Canyon off New York and New Jersey Nominated as National Marine Sanctuary
Brooklyn, N.Y.  – Nov. 18, 2016 – WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) New York Aquarium is leading a broad coalition of organizations and stakeholders working to help the Hudson Canyon, a magnificent underwater canyon few people know exist. Located just 100 miles southeast of the Statue of Liberty, the Hudson Canyon is the East Coast’s largest submarine canyon. Many species of marine life can be found here, including whales, sharks, turtles, deep sea corals and more.

Hundreds Attend the Fourth Annual Sip for the Sea to Support the Wildlife Conservation Society’s New York Aquarium and WCS’s commitment to marine conservation locally and around the world
New York – Sept. 15, 2016 – Nineteen of New York City's best chefs paired their food with great wine from Jekel Vineyards and Bonterra Organic Vineyards at Sip for the Sea 2016 to benefit the WCS’s New York Aquarium. Hundreds attended the event, which raised awareness about the importance of sustainable seafood.  All proceeds will support the New York Aquarium and WCS’s commitment to marine conservation locally and around the world.
